The Berbers, who generally call themselves Amazigh (plural: Imazighen), are the indigenous peoples of North Africa. They have lived in the region for thousands of years, long before the arrival of the Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Arabs, Ottomans, and the French.
They traditionally inhabited a vast area stretching from: Morocco ,Algeria ,Tunisia, Libya, Parts of Mali, Niger and Mauritania.
In ALGERIA: Many Algerians have Berbers ancestry, whether or not they identify as Amazigh today. Major Amazigh groups include: Kabyles in the Kabylie region.Chaouis in the Aurès Mountains.Mozabites in the M'zab Valley.Tuareg in the Sahara.Chenoua around Mount Chenoua. Amazigh people traditionally speak Tamazight, which has several regional varieties such as Kabyle, Chaoui, Tamasheq (Tuareg), and Mzab. In Algeria, Tamazight is recognized as an official language alongside Arabic.
Before Islam, Amazigh people practiced a variety of indigenous beliefs, and later many adopted Christianity or Judaism. Today, the overwhelming majority are Muslims, mostly Sunni.
Are Berbers and Arabs the same?
No. They are different in terms of historical origin: Amazigh (Berbers) are indigenous to North Africa. Arabs originated in the Arabian Peninsula and began arriving in North Africa during the 7th century with the spread of Islam. (Jul-16-2026)
