Before Islam reached North Africa in the 7th century, the area that is now Algeria had a long and diverse history spanning thousands of years.Indigenous Berbers (Amazigh)
The earliest known inhabitants were the Berbers (Amazigh), who had lived in North Africa for millennia. They were organized into many tribes and kingdoms, spoke Amazigh languages, and practiced farming, herding, trade, and warfare.
Numidian Kingdoms (3rd–2nd century BC)
One of the most powerful ancient states in Algeria was the Kingdom of Numidia.Its most famous king was Massinissa.He united many Berber tribes and created a strong kingdom.
Numidia became known for its cavalry, agriculture, and trade with the Mediterranean.
Roman Algeria:After Numidia declined, much of northern Algeria became part of the Roman Empire.The Romans built impressive cities such as Timgad, Djemila, and Hippo Regius.
They constructed roads, aqueducts, theaters, and temples.Latin was widely used in administration, although Amazigh languages continued to be spoken.
Religion:Before Islam, several religions were practiced:Traditional Berber beliefs centered on local deities and ancestor worship.
Punic religion spread through contact with Carthage.Christianity became widespread during Roman rule. One of Christianity's greatest early thinkers, Augustine of Hippo, lived in what is now northeastern Algeria.
The Vandals and Byzantines:After the fall of the Western Roman Empire:The Vandals, a Germanic people, ruled parts of Algeria from the 5th century.In the 6th century, the Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman Empire) regained control of some coastal regions, while many inland Berber tribes remained largely independent.
Arrival of Islam:Beginning in the 7th century, Muslim Arab armies entered North Africa. The spread of Islam took place over several decades through a combination of military campaigns, alliances, trade, and conversion. Many Berber communities gradually adopted Islam, while Amazigh languages and cultural traditions continued alongside the new religion.So, before Islam, Algeria was:
